Garden Notes

Acidity and Alkalinity
The term pH (potential of Hydrogen) is a scale for measurement of the chemical alkaline/acidity level of soil. The full scale runs from 1 to 14, but most garden soils are within the range of 4 to 8. When soil contains lime to give a pH value of over 7, it is said to be alkaline. A pH balance of 6.5 or less is acid. A pH reading of 7 is neutral.

During the winter, test the soil's pH to see how acidic or alkaline it is. Soil testers can be purchased at garden centres.

Pests and Diseases
The best way to control pest and diseases is to spray before an attack and then at regular intervals. Once a disease is established eradication is difficult.

Time to Move
If a shrub has outgrown its space it can be transplanted provided you follow a few rules. Move deciduous shrubs and trees between autumn and spring. Larger shrubs are best moved after they start to shed leaves. For evergreen early autumn or late spring is best. Water in thoroughly.

Colour in Winter
The pansy is one of the best winter flowering plants. Pansies come in a huge colour range as well as white and will flower all winter in milder areas.

Door to your Garden
An arch is the ideal device to define a transition from one part of the garden to another. It acts like a door.

Pebble Mulch
For an attractive, fool poof mulch which keeps soil cool and moist and want blow away try pebbles. They never need replenishing.

Apparent Distance
To increase apparent distance in the garden, grow dark foliaged plants nearest to viewing point and light silver leafed plants at a distance.

The odds have it
When grouping objects such as rocks or the same type of trees, place in odd, rather than even numbered lots.

Hassle Free Mowing
When setting stepping stones or laying a patio make sure that the level is just below the cutting height of the grass. That way you can push your mower straight over the top without snagging, and avoiding having to use shears to finish off.

Think Before you Plant
It is important to look at your garden from inside the house before planting, after all, this is how you will often view it. You may want evergreens in key positions to maintain interest all year round.

Keep Herbs in Easy Reach
Position herbs in a sunny spot near to the kitchen, perhaps a window box, for ease of use when cooking.

Relax and Enjoy
Install a automatic watering system that will water your garden after dark. You can then have more time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard work in your garden.
